Which one applies depends on how much of the work was yours.
You brought the material and turned the knobs — that output is CC0, with no conditions at all. The engine assembled a whole visual world from three words — that output is licensed, and the licence widens with the plan.
Everything below grants rights. Nothing below takes away a right you already have.
The five tools · CC0
Gradient studio, type specimen, photo grader, palette extractor, textures. Whatever you export from them is released under Creative Commons Zero: commercial use, modification, redistribution, no attribution, no account, on every plan including Free.
This is not a trial-tier concession. You supplied the input and the decisions; we supplied controls. Claiming a licence over that would be dishonest.
Universes · Free plan
A universe made on the Free plan may be used for personal work and for your own small commercial projects: your own brand, your own site, your own product, your own client-free work.
The line is resale. You may not deliver a Free-plan universe as part of paid work for someone else, and you may not sell or sublicense the universe itself. Cross that line and you need Studio or Universe — that is the whole distinction, and it is deliberately easy to explain.
The licence is perpetual for what you already made. Downgrading or cancelling does not retroactively make past work unlicensed.
Universes · Studio
Full commercial use for your own brand and your own products, with no carve-outs, no revenue ceiling and no attribution requirement.
Studio does not cover work you deliver to a client for payment. That is what Universe is for.
Universes · Universe plan
Everything Studio grants, plus client work: you may use universes in projects you are paid to deliver, and you may hand the resulting assets to that client for their own use.
You may not resell access to the engine itself, or offer 'universes on demand' as a product built on top of ours. Sell your work, not our tool.
Generated photography
Generated frames follow the same tiering as the engine that produced them.
Two things travel with them. The raw frame comes from a third-party image model whose own terms also apply, and those terms can change without us. And every frame is graded through your universe’s ramp by our engine before you ever see it — the grading is ours, the result is yours on the terms of your plan.
We do not warrant that a generated image is original or clear of third-party rights. Models are trained on large collections and can produce work that resembles something existing. Look at what you are about to publish.
Type
The typefaces a universe picks are not ours to license. Each family belongs to its designer and carries its own terms — mostly the SIL Open Font License, all of them free for commercial use, which is why they are in the catalogue at all.
We reference families by name and never embed or redistribute font files. If you ship a universe, you install the fonts from their source under their licence, exactly as you would on any other project.
Redaction is Ether’s own face. It appears in our interface and never in a universe, and it is not part of what you are licensed to use.
What stays ours
The engine, the code, the site, the name Ether, the wordmark and the curated collections remain the property of Studio 1804 FZE LLC. A licence to output is not a licence to the thing that made it.
